A passenger reports there was a significant outbreak of illness (hundreds of passengers affected) on the Caribbean cruise, December 12 - 19.  According to CDC: the ship reported that an unusual number of passengers and some crew members were experiencing GI illness. The ship’s medical staff reported that 84 of 2742 (3.06%) passengers and 15 of 1100 (1.36%) crew members were ill.  Predominant symptoms are diarrhea and vomiting.  The cruise ends in San Juan on December 19.

The ship’s medical staff reported that 11 of 275 (4%) passengers and 20 of 291 (6.87%) crew members were ill.  Predominant symptoms are diarrhea and vomiting.  The cruise ends in San Diego on December 14.

The ship reported that an unusual number of passengers and some crew members were experiencing GI illness. The ship’s medical staff reported that 73 of 1749 (9.37%) passengers and 9 of 744 (1.21%) crew members were ill.  Predominant symptoms are diarrhea and vomiting.  The cruise ends in New Orleans on December 12.  According to a passenger, the numbers were significantly higher:  "Once the passengers realized that reporting gastrointestinal illnesses would result in a 48 hour quarantine, many just suffered and gutted it out (pun intended) in their rooms."

The ship’s medical staff reported that 44 of 1531 (2.87%) passengers and 4 of 683 (0.58%) crew members were ill.  Predominant symptoms are diarrhea and vomiting.  The cruise ends in Houston on December 11.

M/V Explorer The ship reported that an unusual number of passengers and some crew members were experiencing GI illness. The ship’s medical staff reported that 76 of 758 (10.02%) passengers and 1 of 195 (0.51%) crew members were ill.  Predominant symptoms are diarrhea and vomiting.  The cruise ends in Fort Lauderdale on December 8.

The ten-day cruise was struck with an outbreak of illness.  According to one passenger:  I was confined (quarantined) to my cabin for 5 days with the Norwalk Virus. I got it 4 days into the sailing and at the 1st port we arrived at. I never left the ship. We were later told that the service in the dining room was so poor because everyone was sick. Then we heard from the entertainer that she had the flu and a fever and was the whole crew was given a vaccine(flu shot).  Representatives of the CDC boarded the ship, but no information has yet been released.

I received the following from a passenger onboard the ship:  The captain has just announced that there are sick people on board and that we need to wash our hands especially after we use the restroom ... They have isolated the people who are sick and are in high alert and started the sterilization process to stop the virus before it  gets worse. It must just be starting. The cruise began  in New York on Sept. 11 and ended in Montreal Sept. 21.  On September 21, the ship’s medical staff reported that 47 of 1537 (3.06%) passengers and 7 of 680 (1.03%) crew members were ill. The predominant symptoms were diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and nausea.

It was reported in Kathimerini (English edition) in Athens that 30 passengers (3.82%) and 2 crew members came down with gastroenteritis on a seven-day cruise from Venice.  The ship is carrying 785 passengers and 388 crew.

On August 4, the ship reported that 13 passengers (3.5%) and 5 crew (1.73%) had reported illness consistent with norovirus.  The cruise ran from July 26 - August 6, ending in San Francisco.

A passenger reported:  Just got off their July 24th sailing.  Reportedly had over  25 cases of a GI bug.  Ship was then placed on high alert with sanitizing going on everywhere,  No salt and pepper on tables and the Lido restaurant was placed on no self serve status.  (NOTE:  Incident not included in numbers above)

Princess Cruises reported that that 22 of 614 (3.58%) passengers and 4 of 383 (1.04%) crew members were ill. The predominant symptom is diarrhea.  The ship's voyage will end on August 17, 2004, in Honolulu, HI (sailing dates: July 25-August 17). They will arrive in U.S. port (Saipan) on August 1. CDC numbers: 57 pax (9.22%) and 10 crew (2.52%).

Clipper Cruise Line reported an increased number of cases of gastrointestinal (GI) illness on the ship for the voyage completed on July 27, 2004, in Buffalo, NY (sailing dates: July 1-26).  On July 24th, the ships medical staff reported that 6 of 51 (11.76%) passengers had reported gastrointestinal illness.

The ship reported that 33 passengers (1.35%) and 55 crew (4.07%) were ill with symptoms consistent with Norovirus.  The CDC posted this information on its web site on March 17th, which is twelve days after the ship had docked in Fort Lauderdale (from Sint Maarten); 19 days after it was first alerted that an unusual number of passengers and crew had reported being ill.

The total number reporting ill is unknown and probably remained below the 3% threshold (for this ship, less than 56) of the CDC.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, 328 passengers and 20 crew have been sickened with what appears to be Norwalk-like virus since the second day at sea on this five day cruise to the Caribbean from Galveston.  A passenger reports that the nurse told her the last night of the cruise that the number was well over 600. (The table above uses the official numbers.)
Passengers who reported ill are being offered a full refund or a cruise credit in the amount they had paid toward a future 4 or 5 day cruise.
