December 23 | Emerald Princess | From a passenger: Ship on Code Red on December 21: Noticeable last night with crew wiping down surfaces and at breakfast in the Horizon Court - not sure about the restaurants as we ate last night at the Crown Grille. Captain announced it just after 9am and the Doctor explained the procedures - standard stuff. No indication as to the # of ill passengers or crew, but it seems to have come on suddenly - from no signs of any abnormal concern Friday morning right to code red. This is a 10 day Southern Caribbean cruise (FLL, Aruba, Bonaire, Grenada (today), Dominica, St Thomas, Princess Cay, FLL), first one after dry dock in Nassau. WSVN News report more than 150 passengers and crew members caught the Norovirus aboard the ship. Crews will work to sanitize the ship once it docks at Port Everglades on Thursday. Sick passengers and crew were confined to their rooms to prevent outbreaks on the 10-day cruise.Dec 28:CDC Reports 189 of 3235 passengers (5.84%) and 31 of 1189 crew (2.61%) have reported ill with gastrointestinal illness. March 26 | Island Princess | The Sun-Sentinel reports a number of passengers aboard the ship are experiencing symptoms of gastrointestinal illness. The ship is set to return to Port Everglades tomorrow morning after completing a 10-night Panama Canal itinerary. Officers from the CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program are working with Princess on the issue and will be assisting the cruise line to sanitize the ship when it arrives in Fort Lauderdale. Two VSP public health officers will meet the ship and take samples back for testing to help determine the cause of the illness, CDC spokesman Jay Dempsey said. At present, the reported illnesses are not at “outbreak status,” Dempsey said. That status is typically achieved when three percent or more of passengers have reported symptoms of the illness, which include vomiting and diarrhea. |
March 7 | Ruby Princess | The CDC reports 129 of 3147 passengers (4.10%) and 9 of 1179 crew (0.76%) have reported ill with gastrointestinal illness. Two CDC Vessel Sanitation Program environmental health officers and an epidemiologist boarded the ship on arrival in Ft. Lauderdale on March 4, 2012 to conduct a targeted environmental health assessment and evaluated the outbreak and response activities. The ship was on a 7 day cruise that began February 26 and ended March 4, 2012. UPDATE: The Miami Herald reports there were illnesses on the cruise that followed this one. Followup: St. Helens Reporter reports a couple’s dream holiday turned into a nightmare when they were both struck down with illness while on a week-long luxury cruise. Mr Southworth, 73, who had organised the extra-special trip to mark his wife’s 70th birthday, has since described it as the “holiday from hell”. He said: “Everything was alright until the Wednesday afternoon, when I fell ill and had to skip the evening meal. I was then very ill during the night. “Although I perked up a bit the following afternoon there was no way I could eat and then, on the Friday, I was just staggering around trying to enjoy myself - but all I could do was drink water. “Then, on the Saturday, my wife fell ill, we called the medical centre and were sent tablets and confined to our cabin. “They made special arrangements for us to depart and in the middle of Sunday morning I took ill again. I was so dizzy and disorientated that they offered me a wheelchair.” Mr and Mrs Southworth, who were joined on the cruise last month by six friends, say only two of their group made it through the week unscathed. Mr Southworth: “It was such a shame - it should have been a lovely cruise. We’d saved up for this holiday for quite and it cost us about £1,400. We could have had two good holidays somewhere else for that. “All they said was ‘sorry you didn’t have a good time’, which wasn’t much of a consolation. “My wife was still too ill to go into work on the Tuesday after we got back and I was in no fit state to do anything.” |
February 3 | Crown Princess | Local 10 News reports 140 of 3,013 passengers (4.51%) and 16 of 1,186 crew members (1.54%) have been affected by gastrointestinal illness suspected to be norovirus. The ship is on a seven day cruise that left Ft. Lauderdale 28 January.Update from CDC: 364 pax (11.73%) and 32 crew (2.74%) have reported ill. The CDC reports there were an unknown, but significant number of passenger cases who reported their illness by phone to the medical facility onboard, but were not seen in a timely manner and disembarked the ship. |
February 3 | Ruby Princess | Local 10 News reports 81 passengers (2.59%) and nine crew members (0.76%) have been affected by gastrointestinal illness suspected to be norovirus. The ship is on a seven day cruise that left Ft. Lauderdale 29 January. Update from MSNBC: 92 pax and 13 crew have reported ill. |
January 16 | Star Princess | MSNBC reports Princess Cruises said Monday that it is surprised and disappointed that the Falkland Islands government turned away the ship because a small number of people on board have stomach flu. Falklands government spokesman Darren Christie said it had to deny entry to the ship Saturday because some passengers had contagious norovirus, which the islands are ill-equipped to handle. The decision was made by the Falklands' chief medical officer in consultation with a microbiologist in Britain, Christie said. "An outbreak in the Falkland Islands would put enormous pressure on our limited medical resources, and jeopardize other scheduled cruise visits," his statement said. The cruise line reports 74 passengers and crew were reportedly ill. The ship had planned to dock in Port Stanley in the middle of its 14-day South America cruise from Valparaiso, Chile, to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The ship's next port of call is Tuesday in Buenos Aires, followed by Montevideo, Uruguay. The cruise ends Jan. 21. |

July 1 | Sea Princess | USA Today reports that after three earlier incidents, the Sea Princess experienced yet another outbreak of norovirus, prompting what Princess Cruises officials called a "prolonged and intensive sanitization" before the ship set sail this week from San Francisco on a 10-day Alaska sailing. The extensive cleaning delayed the departure of the ship by more than five hours on Wednesday. A spokeswoman said it was too soon to tell whether the illness had been contained; whether there were any sick passengers or crew on the ship's current sailing. A total of 53 (or 2.4%) of 2,196 passengers were affected by the gastrointestinal illness during the previous sailing, a 10-day cruise that had departed San Francisco on June 19 and returned on Wednesday. The Sea Princess' current norovirus issues began in May when 44 passengers were reported ill on the ship's May 10 sailing from San Francisco to Alaska. |
June 8 | Sea Princess | The CDC reports 135 of 2128 passengers (6.3%) and 6 of 840 crew (0.7%) have reported ill with gastrointestinal illness. A CDC Vessel Sanitation Program environmental health officer will board the ship on arrival in San Francisco on June 09, 2011 to conduct a comprehensive environmental health assessment and evaluate the outbreak and response activities. NOTE: Breaking Travel News reports it will be necessary for the ship to undergo a prolonged and additional disinfection in San Francisco on Thursday, June 9, 2011. As a consequence, embarkation will be delayed. Cruise check-in is now scheduled to begin at 5:30pm. All passengers must be onboard by 7:30pm. In addition, the delayed departure will require itinerary changes. The call to Juneau on June 12 has been cancelled and replaced with a call to Sitka. The call to Haines on June 14 has also been cancelled and replaced with a call to Juneau. |
May 30 | Sea Princess | The CDC reports 128 of 2053 passengers (6.23%) and 13 of 838 crew (1.55%) have reported ill with gastrointestinal illness. CDC Vessel Sanitation Program environmental health officers boarded the ship on arrival in Juneau, AK on May 24, 2011 to conduct a limited, targeted environmental health assessment and evaluated the outbreak and response activities. |
May 19 | Coral Princess | The CDC reports 64 of 1990 passengers (3.22%) and 3 of 873 crew (0.57%) have reported ill with gastrointestinal illness. The ship arrives in San Francinco today following a 15-day cruise that began 9n Ft. Lauderdale. |
May 6 | Emerald Princess | From a reader: I just got a note from my parents who are on the Emerald Princess 16-day transatlantic for the past week or so since 4/27. Apparently they put the ship on Red Alert today for sickness onboard as they have shut down all the self-serve areas of the buffets and are forcing everyone to use hand sanitizer. From a passenger onboard: We were told there were aound 50 cases among pax -- about 2% of pax. quoting from a leter from the Chie Medical Officer and announcement from Captain: "...I would like to advise you that unfortuantely over that last 24hours, we have seen an increase in the number of reported cases of gastrontestinal illness which are strongly suggestive of Norovirus. In order to interrups the sread of illness, we have proactively initiated an extensive santitation program ... You are liely to notice evidence of thee additional measures around the ship." UPDTATE May 10: Things have gotten worse - per captain's message tonight. Rumor is 400 pax sick, but I doubt those numbers. Regardless, they are acting as if we are at red alert. NOTE: Cruise ships are not required to report illness outbreaks when they do not stop at a US port - thus this outbreak will not be eported by th CDC. |
May 4 | Coral Princess | The CDC reports 66 of 1507 passengers (4.38%) and 3 of 874 crew (0.34%) have reported ill with gastrointestinal illness. The ship arrives in Ft. Lauderdale today following a 10-day cruise that began April 24. |
February 16 | Ocean Princess | From a passenger: We were recently aboard the ship for a Southeast Asia cruise from Jan 23, 2011 to Feb 9, 2011. They were very lax in their disease prevention procedures. There was no hand sanitizer entering the main dining room. When I asked for one I was told to go to the washroom and wash my hands. There was only one sanitizer in the buffet room and it was hidden against a corner wall where no one saw it or used it. A large number of passengers became ill with chest infection, congestion and cough. Two of the members of our table of 8 went to the ship's Dr. My husband and I went immediately to our doctor when we got off the plane returning home. We have been on antibiotics and inhalers for over a week. The inhaler is something I have never had to use before. The passengers were talking among themselves about the "cruise cough" being like a "kennel cough" that dogs get when being boarded. They were also complaining about the "sticky" handrails. Although the eating tables were wiped I never smelled the odor of bleach like I have on other ships. I feel that Princess definitely needs to improve their disease prevention procedures on this ship and they are largely responsible for the large number of ill passengers. |
January 25 | Emerald Princess | From a passenger: The Captain has ordered an noro virus alert aboard our ship. Passengers are not allowed to touch any of the plastic serving handles in the buffet, etc etc. He said that U.S. Authorities have been notified. We are at sea today and tomorrow and will dock in Fort Lauderdale on Thursday. |

20.10.10 | Caribbean Princess | CBC reports a ship carrying dozens of passengers, who have been quarantined after contracting a stomach flu, arrived in Saint John Wednesday. Roughly 40 passengers and three crew members aboard the Caribbean Princess have been plagued by an outbreak of the stomach flu. The sick have been barred from leaving the cruise ship while it is in port in Saint John because the virus is easily spread. UPDATE: Boarding in New York City on Saturday (October 23) was delayed while crew sanitized the ship. |
5.6.10 | Sapphire Princess | From a reader: The ship will dock at Pier 91 in Seattle on Sunday June 6 with reports that a number of passangers have the symptoms associated with norovirus.Passengers and luggage will be removed from the ship separately and the luggage will be stored and handled separately. June 6: King 5 News reports the cruise line confirmed that 96 passengers had contracted gastrointestinal illness caused by norovirus. |
16.5.10 | Grand Princess | The Daily Mirror reports dozens of passengers on a Mediterranean cruise were yesterday confined to their cabins as a result of norovirus. More than 2,500 people are on board - and the number of people becoming ill was said to be growing by the hour. Passengers David and Jackie Greenslade have been confined to cabin since Wednesday.David: "It was supposed to be a dream holiday but it's turned into a nightmare. People are dropping like flies." A spokesman for the cruise line said: "Out of 2,468 passengers only 30 have been affected so far." The Daily Echo subsequently reported that Princess said 57 people had reported ill, and that there had been an outbreak on the precceding cruise. According the the newspaper, the cruise line had notified passengers when they boarded the cruise that there had been an illness outbreak on the cruise that had just ended. |
5.3.10 | Golden Princess | From a reader: I was on the Golden Princess mid Jan to end of Jan to Hawai and was sick from a norovirus type of illness. Forced to keep cabin for 2 days, no air with broken air condition ... What a way to vacation. There was a rumor about 400 people sick and few escorted by ambulance to the hospital. Of course Princess denies responsibility and does not want to reveal the CDC report. |
12.1.10 | Dawn Princess | Sydney Morning Herald reports more than 240 Australian passengers on a cruise to New Zealand were struck down by a gastro virus. Health officials boarded the ship when it docked at Station Pier in Melbourne early yesterday to examine infection-control procedures after the outbreak caused vomiting and diarrhoea among passengers. All passengers were allowed to leave the ship which was ending its 13-night cruise in Melbourne. "The infection control officer will be checking that cleaning procedures have been carried out to prevent any further spread," said Victorian health department spokesman Graeme Walker. Carnival Australia, the company that operates the ship, confirmed the outbreak happened three days after it left Melbourne on December 29 with about 2000 passengers. |

16.6.09 | Diamond Princess | News 8 reports norovirus has caused several people to not be allowed to leave their rooms for fear of spreading the virus. One passengers says the captain told them the highly contagious stomach illness norovirus is on board and people are cleaning the ship, hoping it will get better. She says, the group was told hundreds of people had norovirus. She says most people are being served food in their rooms to prevent others from getting sick at the buffet. Princess Cruises released a statement saying, "We have a small number of passengers with symptoms of norovirus -- nothing unusual or escalated." They also say people who are sick have been asked to stay in their rooms. Last fall, sources say 400 British passengers were quarantined in China after norovirus spread aboard the Diamond Princess. |
27.5.09 | Coral Princess | The Anchorage Daily News reports a gastrointestinal illness outbreak on Sunday sickened 108 of its 2,000 passengers and seven crew members. The ship arrived in Whittier on Monday shortly after noon and was scrubbed down before taking on a new load of passengers that evening. The CDC subsequently reported 121 of 2001 (6.05) passengers and 7 0f 914 (0.77%) crew report ill. From a passenger: The first shipboard announcement was on the 23rd. Announcements suggested people use the toilets in their cabins, and to wash their hands for at least 20 seconds. Only change to shipboard routine we saw was at the buffet line: waiters served food to each person as they walked by, rather than allowing people to take their own food. Routines in the regular dining rooms remained unchanged. A man in the cabin next to us said his wife was quarantined to her cabin and would disembark through a different route than the other passengers. |
20.5.09 | Sea Princess | Grimsby Telegraph reports a norovirus outbreak on a cruise ending in Montego Bay (thus it will not be reported to the CDC). According to the newspaper, the day the cruise was to end the captain announced there was an outbreak of Norovirus, An elderly couple celebrating their golden wedding anniversary were struck with the illness and moved by the cruise line to the Altamont Hotel in Montego Bay, decribed by the husband as "cheap and small, situated on the Hip Strip, with police patrolling up and down the promenade in pairs." They say they were not allowed to leave the hotel for 48 hours, and claim to have received no information from the Princess Cruises, which organised the trip. Eventually, 10 more couples who were affected by the outbreak joined the pair in the hotel. Princess Cruises confirmed the norovirus outbreak. |
6.5.09 | Island Princess | The ship reported 7 of 894 (0.56%) crew and 100 of 1954 (5.12%) passengers had reported ill with gastrointestinal illness on a 14 day cruise ending May 7. |
20.3.09 | Island Princess | From a passenger: A friend and I are currently on the 10-day Panama cruise out of Fort Lauderdale, FL, and suspect a norovirus outbreak. As of yesterday, passengers are not allowed to serve themselves in the buffet and dinner rolls in the restaurants are served by waiters, not in baskets where passengers help themselves. Staff are everywhere with antiseptic spray, wiping down everything all day long. |
11.2.09 |
Coral Princess |
The ship reported 10 of 885 (1.13%) crew and 164 of 1996 (8.22%) passengers had reported ill with gastrointestinal illness on a 10 day Caribbean/Panama Canal cruise (Fort Lauderdale return) that February 3 and ends February 13. UPDATE February 13: Numbers have been revised to 19 of 885 (2.1%) crew and 252 of 1996 (12.6%) passengers. |
19.1.09 |
Tahitian Princess | A blogger onboard reports: At approximately 4.30 PM there was an announcement by the Captain over the speaker system on the ship, broadcasting not only in the public areas but also into the cabins (this indicated something of great importance) to say that there had been an outbreak of the 'Norwalk Virus' on board and that a number of people had been confined to their cabins and the remainder of us should take extra care with hand washing etc., in order to eradicate the problem. NOTE: Because the ship is cruising to South America, the number of passengers becoming ill will not be reported to or by the Centres for Disease Control. However, it has been reported that 86 passengers were ill. |

From a passenger: I
have recently cruised from Sydney to Sydney on a 28 day Tahitian Pearls
cruise to South Pacific Islands, Cook Islands, Tonga, Tahiti &
Fiji. From day 2 of the cruise many of the passengers and crew
people began getting very sick. Flu like symptoms.
Very bad throat and cough, it was a Respiratory Infection/Influenza
1. Every day the medical centre on the ship had many people
seeking medical help. When passengers asked the medical team on the
ship what they should do - they told them to get off the ship ASAP! the
medical staff appeared to be overwhelmed and unprepared to deal with
the scale of the outbreak. The Captain even got the Respiratory
Infection. I was prepared as I had a supply of antibiotics from my
doctor prior to going on the cruise. We witnessed two coffins
being taken off the ship in full view of passengers at Papeete and
being loaded into the ambulance. Our holiday was spoiled as we tried as
best as possible to isolate ourselves. For 26 days of the 28 day cruise
most of the passengers continued to get around the ship with little
concern for spreading the coughs & sneezes! The
Norovirus outbreak was also a problem passengers were told not to use
the public toilet facilities - to use their cabin facilities - that may
have worked except that on many occasions we had no water in our
cabins. The worrying thing is that the illnesses where taken to each of
the islands we visited, unfortunately the islanders do not have access
to our medical services. The ship should have been quarantined in the
first week when these illnesses turned into an epidemic! |

Diamond Princess | The
Sun (UK)
and Shanghai
Daily reports up to 400 passengers hit with
a vomiting bug were confined to
cabins (quarantined) for 48 hours by officials at Shanghai in China.
Health and safety bosses were on the verge of forbidding the ship from
even docking. But they eventually decided to let 2,000 healthy
passengers ashore. However, other people, including 13 crew members,
were holed up in their rooms to prevent the highly contagious norovirus
spreading. The bug hit the ship on Sunday evening as it sailed from
Japan. |
24.10.08 |
Caribbean Princess | CBC reports that 105 passengers and 3 crew have been sickened by a bug believed to be norovirus. The ship docked today at Halifax, Nova Scotia. Princess Cruises said in a written statement that extra sanitation procedures were put into practice as soon as a higher-than-usual number of sick passengers was reported. Ill passengers are isolated in their cabins until they are non-contagious. Yesterday a crew member was taken off the ship in Saint John and transferred by ambulance to hospital for an unknown illness -- it is unknown whether his illness is related to this outbreak of what appears to be norovirus. UPDATE: The CDC reported October 27 that 172 of 3081 passengers (5.58%) and 13 of 1161 crew members (1.12%) reported ill on the cruise. |
16.6.08 | Dawn Princess | The ship reported 4 (0.48%) crew and 68 (3.15%) passengers had reported ill with gastrointestinal illness on a 10 day cruise to/from San Francisco. |
27.5.08 |
Sun Princess |
A
passenger reports there was a large outbreak of gastrointestinal
illness on the cruise from Freemantle (Australia) to Vietnam/Asia.
Exact numbers have not been reported and are not required by the CDC to
be reported given that the cruise does not include any US ports. |
1.5.08 | Diamond Princess | The ship reported 5 (0.45%) crew and 92 (3.37%) passengers had reported ill on a 14 day cruise to/from Los Angeles. |
9.3.08 |
Sun Princess | The cruise ending today (14 day Sydney to New Zealand return) reportedly had an outbreak of norovirus affecting approximately 100 passengers. According to a passenger, The increased sanitisation program that was put in place made things unpleasant; instead of relaxing on board you were constantly on guard not to touch the banisters, walking the stairs instead of using the lifts, avoiding contact with any other passenger, waiting in long queues for food because services were disrupted, having to walk around with hand sanitisation gel etc. Staff attitudes were also affected -- deck hands were used as sanitisation crews and were putting in many hours extra, and Wait staffs had to do much more as well, like putting salt and pepper on food, as all salt and pepper pots had been removed. All SPA baths were closed; so were the laundry facilities (which made things unpleasant as under clothes had to be washed in the staterooms and after 14 days at sea fresh clothes were becoming a problem). |
13.1.08 |
Dawn Princess | A passengers writes that "many, many passengers" came down with gastrointestinal illness during the seven day cruise from San Diego to the Mexican Riviera. The CDC has not reported an outbreak. which requires 3% or more of passengers to report illness to the infirmary -- in the case of this ship there would need to be 60 passengers reporting ill to meet the CDC threshold. NOTE: A passenger on the cruise embarking January 20 also reports a large number of passengers with gastrointestinal illness during the cruise. CDC reports 6 (0.69%) crew and 101 (4.84%) passengers had reported ill |
10.1.08 |
Pacific Princess | The ship reported 3 of 369 (0.81%) crew and 33 of 642 (5.14%) passengers had reported ill on a cruise that began December 15 in Tahiti and which disembarked at Ft. saying that "about 2.5 percent of those onboard" (reportedly 4500
passengers and crew) had reported ill. If the distribution
between
crew and passengers is as it usually is, the percentage is closer to 4
percent of passengers. |

Diamond Princess | Just got off the Diamond Princess cruise to Alaska - 9/2 - 9/9/06 .. ship was delayed on 9/2/06 by three hours due to the norovirus on the previous cruise. Before boarding we were given "Precaution Health Advisory Norovirus" letters - from Dr Grant Tarling, warning us of the illness and the precautionary measures we should take. We received another "Health Advisory Update" letter on Thursday, 9/7/06 stating that over the last 24 hours they had "noticed an increase in new cases strongly suggestive of Norovirus" and requested our continued support with their recommended health precautions. The CDC reports 4 of 1120 crew (0.36%) and 127 of 2643 passengers (4.81%) were reported as ill. |
27.8.06 |
Diamond Princess | From a passenger: Norovirus was reported on Aug 27 and the ship's Doctor sent out several memos. Capt also mentioned hygienic precautions in at least one noontime report from the bridge. Cruise director also came down with it and spent 2 days in his cabin. Each dining room had a list of cabin numbers in quarantine. You had to give your cabin number to enter the dining room. I got a peek at the list and there were three pages of probably 20 entries per page. Would estimate minimum of 60 cases that were reported. Suspect there were many others who were sick but did not report because they did not want to be quarantined. |

From a passenger: My wife and I both got the Norwalk virus on the second 14 day cruise on the Sea Princess in April, 2006. Helen got it first and than me. They really had a big break-out but really tried to cover it up. I asked the doctor how many cases they had on board and he told me a few. When he was preparing a shot for me in the outer room, I noticed a computer listing(listed all the cases by cabin and date, etc.) on his desk. IT WAS NOT JUST A FEW-the list looked(I glanced it for about 3-4 minutes) to be about 40/page and covered about 10 pages!!!! The doctor did not notice that I saw it but he did turn it over when he came back into his office. The crew was told to say nothing to us but our cabin attendant told us they had hundreds of sick passengers and crew. I should have suspected something was really wrong when they were cleaning everything all over the ship. |

There
was an outbreak of Norwalk-like virus on the ship
on Aug 19th, the day after it left Copenhagen. A total of 301
passengers and 45 crew were reportedly ill during the planned 16 day
cruise. The cruise ended two days early
in NYC (Sept 2) after missing planned stops in Greenland and
Newfoundland. While the cruise line suggests that a passenger
brought the virus with them when they boarded in Copenhagen, a
psasenger on the previous cruise reports that there had been "...several days of
overflowing toilets in the public restrooms, as well
as in the passengers cabins occured. Carpets were changed, plastic
over carpet in several areas seemed the norm. Several crew members
fell ill including our assistant waiter who was quarentined for days."
There were purportedly plumbing problems on several earlier
cruises as well. A report from onboard
indicates
that
as of September 7th, there have been no illnesses and all
of the crew is back on duty. |
