A poster at Cruise Critic reports a crew member fell to his death in Palma on Tuesday, round about lunchtime. We heard the call Man Overboard, Muster, but as it was called out in a low key tone we thought nothing more of it. But then some of us went up to top deck and leaned over the balcony and watched as the tender came in with what looked like a model in the back. We thought it was a practice but a passenger stated (having been told by someone) that it was indeed for real, that a workman had fallen from the ship and wasn't breathing. We saw the medics on board the tender, taking photos and feeling his limbs, then were all moved away from the railing. The Majorca Daily Bulletin says the body of the 42 year old Indian man was 42 was spotted floating in the sea at about midday. | Crewmember overboard |

The Daily
Telegraph reports the company will cease operation in 2010. The
company’s two ships are now to be transferred to Australia in 2009 and
2010. The first ship will transfer to P&O Cruises Australia in time
for Christmas 2009, followed by the second a year later. Parent company
Carnival UK, which also runs P&O Cruises and Cunard Line, said a
single ship would operate in the Caribbean in winter 2009-10 and in
Europe in summer 2010. According to the Thomson
Holidays website the last cruise of Island Escape will be September
2009; the last for Island Star is
March 2009 after Caribbean sailings.
It suggests that Island Escape
will become part of TUI Cruises which is
a joint venture between TUI and Royal Caribbean. It is doubtful the
other ship will go to Australia given that P&O is owned by Carnival
Corporation -- there is some indication it will revert back to Royal
Caribbean (perhaps to Pullmantur?). We'll have to watch to
see. |

The Daily Mirror in the UK reports a man lost his left leg after burning his feet on the ship's metal deck during a Caribbean cruise. His limb was amputated below the knee when infection set in. His feet stuck on the deck as he sunbathed -- he says: "They started to sizzle. I wrenched them up and the skin was all off the foot. I was in agony." He was flown home from the ship in Belize. | Freaky injury |

According to a passenger, a lifeless man was pulled out of the Crystal pool on deck 12. Medics were called, passengers were cleared from decks 12 and 14, but attempts to revive were unsuccessful. The deck area was reopened 90 minutes later. The man's body was taken off the ship at Civitavecchia during which time the side of the ship was closed off to all passengers to prevent them from seeing the hearse. In contrast (and distressing to the passenger who wrote) was that the staff person in charge of music on deck 12 continued to play music whilst the attempt to revive the gentleman was going on. In his view, hearing 'Hi-Ho Silver Lining' whilst the crew were trying to revive the passenger was somewhat distasteful. | Passenger Death --- Relevant for how the situation was handled |
