March 5 | Kong Herald | NBC News reports the ship was forced to wait for the tide to come in and lift the ship off the underground rock at the entrance to Trollfjord where it was grounded. No injuries were reported in the incident, and a statement from the line described the situation onboard as calm. Once the incoming tide freed Kong Harald from its grounding, the ship carried on to Svolvaer, where all 258 passengers onboard disembarked and will be flown home today. Hurtigruten canceled the remainder of the 8-night Stokmarknes to Kirkenes to Bergen cruise, and the ship is on its way to dry-dock in Fiskarstrand for repairs to its breached hull. There has been no word from the line concerning compensation. | Aground |
January 22 | Fram | BBC reports the crew of the Royal Navy's Portsmouth-based ice patrol vessel has rescued a cruise ship threatened by Antarctic ice. HMS Protector broke through thick ice to free the ship when it became surrounded by fast moving floes in Antarctic Sound. No-one was hurt during the operation which took two hours. Captain Peter Sparkes said HMS Protector was "the Royal Navy's equivalent of a Swiss army knife". Working at a speed of two knots, HMS Protector broke the four-metre thick ice, which had trapped the cruise ship's bow, in two hours. The area is prone to changes in winds and local currents, and ships can quickly become trapped, sometimes for weeks, when the concentration of pack ice increases. MS Fram, which is purpose-built for sailing in polar waters was on a tour of the Antarctic Peninsula when the incident happened on 15 January. USA Today reports Hurtigruten is downplaying media reports of the rescue. In a short statement, the line says that what a Royal Navy press release referred to earlier today as a "extremely impressive feat" of aid by the HMS Protector was little more than a "friendly gesture between two ships." The line says the HMS Protector, an icebreaker, offered Hurtigruten's 276-passenger Fram assistance in getting to and from a landing spot for passengers in Antarctica called Brown Bluff. "The ship was therefore escorted in and out of Brown Bluff by HMS Protector," the statement says. "This was a friendly gesture between two ships who are all part of the same 'family' when sailing in the remote areas of Antarctica." | Rescued from ice |

September 15 | Nordlys | Norway International Network reports two crew members were found dead on board a Hurtigruten vessel hit by fire in its engine room Thursday morning. Passengers and other crew on board the vessel were evacuated, many by lifeboat. The number of persons injured was set at 16. The MS Nordlys is one of the vessels in the Hurtigruten fleet that sails north and south along the coast of Norway. Hurtigruten officials said there were 262 persons on board the Nordlys including 207 passengers and a crew of 55. Around 100 passengers were evacuated in the vessel’s lifeboats before the vessel managed to make its way into the west coast city of Ålesund with assistance from emergency vessels. Other passengers and crew were taken off the vessel on improvised gangways from the vessel to the pier and later to a local hotel. UPDATE: The Washington Post reports salvage teams reported progress on Friday as they pumped water from the cruise liner in danger of capsizing, a day after a fire on board killed two crew members and forced the evacuation of 260 other people. The ship, which tilted critically at an angle of 21.7 degrees in the morning, had slowly righted itself and was listing at 16 degrees in the evening as additional pumps spewed water from the slanting ship’s bowels, officials said. | Fire - abandon ship |

Business Review reports that the ship ran aground at the port of
Trondheim on the west coast of Norway at 0757 this morning. It suffered
propeller damage and took on board water through a leak in a seal and
the 153 passengers on board have been evacuated. The ship was so close
to the pier that the rescue operation could be conducted by the local
emergency services from land. The vessel is now sitting on a mud bank
and divers have been sent to investigate damage to the hull. No damage
to the hull had been detected, but it is expected that the ship will
have to enter dry dock for repairs and inspection. |

The ship had engine failure and was without power for about two hours while near Brown Bluff on the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula. According to a passenger, the ship suddenly lost power and began to drift straight toward a "towering wall of ice. It bent the railing and a lifeboat was completely crushed." The engine was restarted and the ship headed for King George Island where it will be inspected for damage. A decision will be made then about whether the cruise will continue. UPDATE: The ship's January 2 cruise has been canceled so the ship can undergo repairs after its brush with a glacier December 28. The cruise scheduled for January 10 from Ushuaia is expected to proceed as planned. | Collision with iceberg |

Finnmarken | The Norwegian press reports that 17 passengers (about 3% of those onboard) have reported ill with norovirus in the past 24 hours. A contagion prevention doctor was meeting with company officials to decide what measures should be taken. UPDATE MAY 30: Norway health officials say drinking water is likely the source of the illness outbreak. "Tests we have taken on board Midnattsol and Finnmarken indicate that systems meant to cleanse the water of virus and parasites function poorly," Tom Arne Hanssen of the government's food safety authority told Aftenposten. | Illness |
