The Daily Mail reports the passenger ferry is listing along a dock in Marseille after being wrenched from her moorings by 60mph winds that battered France's southern coast on October 28th. It rotated before crashing into the wharf after some dozen ropes snapped in the early hours of Sunday morning, according to reports today. The impact ripped a 30-metre long hole in the rear of the boat below the waterline, according to owners Nationale Corse Méditerranée (SNCM). Water poured into two watertight compartments and the ship's keel now 'seems to rest on the bottom,' a SNCM spokesman told Metro France. No one was hurt in the incident as the ferry is currently out of service for the winter. The ship can carry 2,650 passengers and 708 vehicles. September 20 | DFDS Seaways | The Herald Sun reports JAMES Bailey fell asleep at the bar on a stag night cruise. He woke up on fire. And no-one will tell him what happened. Bailey, 28, from Lanarkshire in England is seeking legal advice after he says the owners of the Amsterdam booze cruise boat refused to accept any responsibility for the incident. He told the Daily Mail: “After a few drinks I feel asleep at a table on the eighth floor bar. Most of my friends were either asleep or back in their rooms. “I suddenly awoke in extreme agony and quickly realised my clothes were on fire. “The bartender assisted in removing my shirt and putting out the flames. “I burned my hand which instantly blistered to the size of a grape. Mr Bailey claims there was a group of 20-30 people in the bar when the incident occurred plus the bar staff. And yet no-one can tell him how he came to be on fire. He said shocked bar staff doused the flames but not before he suffered first, second and third degree burns. Cruise Law News reports the cruise-ferry , which operates between Oslo and Fredrikshavn in Denmark, was hit by an explosion in its engine room over the Easter weekend. The explosion sparked a fire. A newspaper in Norway reports that "alarmed residents south of Drøbak called emergency services when they saw smoke billowing from the ship and noted that it was off course in the sound leading into the inner Oslo Fjord." A Stena Line spokesman confirmed that the explosion created a lot of smoke but claimed it was contained by the vessel’s sprinkling system in the engine room. The vessel drifted for a brief period but was able to continue sailing towards Oslo, where it arrived around 30 minutes late. 1,392 passengers and a crew of 180 were on on board at the time of the explosion and fire, although no evacuation took place. |

The Daily Mail reports around 200 undergraduates stripped naked, smashed glasses and overturned furniture during a night of havoc on the ferry last week. The early-morning ferry was sailing from Dover to Calais on Sunday April 1 when students from the University of Manchester clashed with rivals from the Manchester Metropolitan University in the ship’s bar. Students from the two Manchester universities caused a mass brawl onboard. Passengers, many with young children, had to be moved to a secure room for their own safety. Crew members said many of the students, who were going skiing, were drunk before they boarded the ship. It has been reported that students were seen dancing on the tables and were even exposing themselves. Men and women are believed to have been streaking and fighting at the bar and a P&O spokeswoman said they were forced to take all non-university passengers to an area of the ship which is usually an exclusive lounge so they were 'out of harm's way'. | Mass brawl |

The Guardian reports a suspected illegal immigrant sparked a five-hour air and sea search after jumping off a cross-Channel ferry in a desperate attempt to get into Britain. The apparent stowaway leapt into rough and freezing seas as the boat approached Poole harbour, in Dorset. Despite 65mph winds and 3-metre (10ft) waves, he made it 50 metres to shore on the exclusive Sandbanks peninsula, wearing a wetsuit under his clothes to protect him from hypothermia. He was caught when he was spotted dripping wet while boarding a chain ferry that crosses the harbour. At first he told police through an interpreter that a second man also went overboard with him and two women colleagues were left on board. A huge search of the harbour was launched involving some 50 lifeboat personnel, coastguards and police officers, costing around £26,000. The operation was called off at 5.30am and although police continued to search the shoreline, they found no trace of anyone else involved. The man, aged in his 40s, was arrested on suspicion of being an illegal immigrant and is being questioned by immigration officials in Poole. | Pax jumps overboard - rescued |

The Orcadian Daily News (Orkney Islands) reports that four passengers on NorthLink Ferry's northbound Hrossey sustained minor injuries in severe weather conditions on Thursday morning. The vessel encountered heavier than forecast south-easterly gales (force 10) off the Fair Isle, and, in very heavy seas, a sudden roll to port led to four passengers sustaining minor injuries. Additionally, a number of cars were slightly damaged and a plate glass panel was broken by a sofa. Speaking on Thursday morning, a NorthLink spokesman commented: "Four passengers sustained minor injuries when the vessel lurched unexpectedly during a particularly heavy roll — one who who sitting in the bar, one who was asleep in a bunk and a couple who were asleep on a sofa. "So far as I am aware, at the moment, hospitalisation was not required." | Injuries in rough seas |

Safety at Sea International reports the officers of two Swedish ferries that collided today near Stockholm harbour in thick fog are to be interviewed by police. The ships collided about 1100 local time. Rescuers said at least 12 people were injured, with five of them sent to a hospital; 1,338 passengers and 76 crew were aboard the larger M/S Gotland, which had a 30cm hole in its hull, according to passengers. The smaller HSC Gotlandia 2, with 532 passengers and 19 crew onboard, was reported seriously damaged, including a huge hole torn at the height of the passenger seating area. The vessel has been declared operationally safe and will be sent to a repair yard. A passenger aboard M/S Gotland told the newspaper: "The whole boat shuddered and we started swinging back and forth." Passengers on the smaller ferry reported a huge bang, quickly followed by sirens, then a din of falling and crushing structures all around them. A police officer said its starboard side was completely smashed. Reports from passengers on the smaller ferry indicated that it had been trying to avoid another large ship emerging from Nynäshamn in thick fog, which caused it to veer into the path of the oncoming M/S Gotland. Boston Globe reports A skipper in training navigated a ferry to Provincetown into a sandbar in Boston Harbor Saturday morning. No injuries were reported, and all 149 passengers were transferred to another Bay State ferry. The company said a captain who has been training for about a month missed navigational marks and skidded onto a sandbar near Nixes Mate, a small patch of land between Deer Island and Long Island. “At this time, it appears to us that it was a matter of operator error, clear and simple,” Michael Glasfeld, a spokesman for Bay State Cruise Co., wrote in the statement. “Our electronic equipment is top notch, and there is no excuse for having missed the navigational marks and being as far out of position as they were.” Another captain with six years of experience was supervising the operation, Glasfeld said. “It appears at this time that the fault is ours completely, and we bear the responsibility fully,” Glasfeld wrote. The captain driving the ship was fired, Glasfeld said. At 5 p.m. Saturday, about an hour before high tide, the boat dislodged and crews slowly drove it back to the harbor for inspection. | Aground |

The Alaska ferry nearly sank after running aground Cozian Reef in Peril Strait en route to Sitka. 86 passengers and 23 crew were on board at the time and all safely evacuated the ship upon grounding. Soon after, 23,000 gallons of fuel were pumped out of the fuel tanks and cars were transferred to a landing craft in an elaborate procedure. A salvage operation then began and the vessel was successfully escorted to Ketchikan's Alaska Ship and Dry Dock for repairs under tow after temporary patches were put onto the expansive gashes that compromised five separate compartments of the hull — enough to have sunk the ship had it been lifted off its perch on the reef. After assessing the circumstances of the grounding, it was concluded operator error caused the incident (not the notorious tidal currents that Peril Strait is known for) and those in command of the vessel were fired from the ferry system. | Grounded |

eTurboNews reports two bodies have been recovered and 46 people remain missing after a ferry sank last night in waters off Tonga. The ferry sank in waters north of the main island of Tongatapu last night. A passenger said the sea was rough and the waves went into the lower deck of the ferry where the crew were. The ferry rocked and he believed this caused the cargo to move to one side. The ferry then began to overturn and some passengers jumped off. The ferry was heading from Nuku'alofa to Ha'afeva, in the Nomuka Islands group, when it issued a mayday call just before 11pm. The first rescue boats to reach the scene pulled 42 people from liferafts - 17 passengers and 25 crew, including the captain. Another 11 were subsequently found safe and well this morning. Safety at Sea International reports hopes are fading today that up to 33 passengers will be found alive from the sinking of an inter-island ferry last night off Tonga in the South Pacific. Local authorities now believe the 1972-built Princess Ashika had up to 100 people aboard when it foundered 85km northeast of the Tongan capital of Nuku-alofa at about 2300 local time last night. Women and children were said to be sleeping when waves struck the ferry. A survivor told reporters in Tonga that seven of eight life rafts were filled with men, while a ninth drifted away empty. Many of the missing were believed to be women and children. Rescuers saved 53 people, and two bodies have been recovered. The ship, built as Olive Maru No 1, began its temporary Tongan deployment on 4 July, replacing Polynesia Shipping’s Olovaha (955gt and built in 1981). The accident is the second South Pacific ferry disaster in just a few weeks; a vessel sank near Kiribati last month with the loss of 33 lives. | Sank | |
